AI Voice Agents Are “Ready” (But Are You?)
So apparently AI voice agents are ready to take our calls now. How refreshingly optimistic. 📞🤖
Here are 3 key points from the latest WSJ piece that caught my attention:
💰 The Money is Talking: VC investment in voice AI startups exploded from $315M in 2022 to $2.1B in 2024. Either investors have completely lost their minds (again), or there’s something real here beyond the hype cycle.
🎭 They’re Getting Scary Good: These aren’t your grandma’s IVR systems. Modern voice agents can handle interruptions, detect emotions, and maintain context across conversations. Some customers reportedly prefer them to humans. Apparently, consistency and infinite patience have their appeal.
🏢 Enterprise Reality Check: Despite all the fanfare, most companies are starting small—automating specific call types rather than going full Skynet. Smart move, considering most enterprises aren’t even “agent-ready” from an infrastructure perspective.
Bottom line: The technology is maturing fast, but implementation success still depends on having your operational house in order first.
